Due to aggressive growth plans Polestar is currently looking to recruit a Digital Vehicle Senior Engineer.

At Polestar, we believe that maximising the use of virtual tools is the most cost-effective and efficient route to ensuring accurate and robust design & engineering data. Our aim is to interrogate the designs thoroughly in the virtual world to:

Minimise the dependence on expensive and time-consuming physical prototypes Ensure designs are compatible, complete, robust and optimal prior to committing production tooling Improve time-to-market and minimise late design change Ensure manufacturing, attribute and quality targets are met by design & engineering

The Digital Vehicle Series is a process of successive virtual events and analysis loops of full vehicle Engineering Data (CAD, Non-Geometric Data and Models) as a technique for achieving the above.

Key Objectives & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Digital Vehicle Manager, the Digital Vehicle Senior Engineer will be responsible for managing a team of engineers across multiple vehicle programs, responsible for the following:

  • Defining, setting up and running the Digital Vehicle Series at Polestar, applying all the rigour and urgency normally seen in physical pre-production builds
  • Defining data submission milestones & data quality targets, coordinating data freeze points, conducting virtual reviews, logging issues, managing the resolution, and organising report out events
  • Seeking out, researching, and implementing virtual tools & methods that maximise the value of Digital Vehicle events, represent industry best practice, but still offer value for money
  • Conducting virtual events to:
    • o Assess Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) suitability
    • o Conduct flight path, ergonomic and accessibility assessments
    • o Review physical/dimensional compatibility
    • o Assess system functionality and attribute level performance
  • Authoring & implementing a gateway process to set objective measures of compatibility, completeness, functionality, and quality of vehicle Engineering Data

Overall, the Digital Vehicle Senior Engineer will form a close working relationship with multiple R&D Function Groups and wider Business Departments to take a shared ownership of completing key vehicle development objectives.

The evolution and continuous improvement of the Digital Vehicle processes and working methods form a significant part of Polestar R&D’s activities, and to be successful need to be developed with the collaboration of all the stakeholders. You’ll need to be able to collaborate with the R&D Function Groups, Programme Managers, PDM/PLM teams (managing Bills of Materials and CAD data), Manufacturing and Vehicle Engineering to come up with lightweight-but-robust approaches that cater for all requirements.

We are small team and wish to remain as light and agile as we can.

The Person

The ideal candidate will:

  • Experienced in coaching and managing other engineers to deliver Digital/Virtual vehicle program activities to a structured development framework and timeline
  • Have a varied experience within automotive OEMs, with a broad understanding of the whole-vehicle Digital/Virtual product development systems and processes used in both smaller and larger organisations
  • Experienced in coordinating Engineering Data (CAD, NGD & Models) in the digital environment
  • Experience of setting up and running Digital / Virtual series (in an OEM environment)
  • Thorough understanding of virtual tools – CAD, PLM, Digital Mock-Up, Clash Detection, CAE etc
  • Have a solid understanding of (ideally multiple) automotive product development systems and the various support processes that are required to support them, e.g.:
    • PLM for CAD, NGD and CAE management
    • Design Verification & Validation planning, testing and engineering sign-off
    • Bill of Materials and Bill of Process management
    • Issue Management

In addition to the above, you’ll require:

  • Excellent communication and co-ordination skills - at ease working with a cross-functional team of engineers and suppliers.
  • Flexible, enthusiastic individual who is self-motivated, able to work well under own initiative and remain focused under pressure.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to prioritise workload & manage external inputs/requests
